TPR Is On ‘Hit It Or Quit It’

May 4, 2010

As Vocalo.org continues to reimagine what Chicago’s South-side and NW Indiana want from their speakerbox, they’ve added bigger names and fresher faces. Hit It Or Quit It is a new podcast hosted by local feminist and Chicago Reader columnist Jessica Hopper, along with JR Nelson. The podcast is produced by Michael Catano, and you can follow them on twitter @hititpodcast, via email at hititpodcast((@))gmail.com, or at vocalo.org/hitit . So far, there are three downloadable pods, each with their own special guests. I was called to be the “queer on the street” or “gay in the club” or “light in the loafer” and we chatted about Chicago’s best queer dance parties, banging records for this summer and what I like about community. HIOQI #3 also features call-ins from  Cody Critcheloe of SSION and Rock critic Nick Sylvester, but I come in at about the 20 minute mark. Cool! Can’t wait for more pods from Hopper and Nelson, they were a nice pair of hosts really attuned to Chicago’s landscape. No wonder they called me! Click here to go to the pod.

Stories From Windy City Black Pride

July 17, 2009

Photobucket

A couple of weekends ago I was tabling for Vocalo.org at Windy City Black Pride, the MIdwest’s largest gathering of GLBTQ people of color. The set up was to collect stories via a “yard sale.” We have a various objects on a table and festival goers are allowed to take anything they want as long as they tell me a story. I got MANY good voices and produced them for the Vocalo.org library. It’s really easy to get YOUR voice heard on a full power non-profit radio station using the tools at their website, WCBP was no exception. These people got some free stuff and told some great stories. Here are a two, click over for the rest of them at my Vocalo.org profile.

Players vs. Heart Breaks, a splicing of several interviews with those who play and those who have been played.

I Tried It, a funny story of a woman who has tried gay life but didn’t like it:

Get Gay Married On The Radio

June 2, 2009

Photobucket

Vocalo.org is a non-profit, public radio station serving the Southside of Chicago and Northwest Indiana (89.5FM WBEW Chesterton). We are working on a marriage-centered broadcast initiative for the month of June and we want to marry a couple, live on the air. Always wanting to slant things OUR way, I am focusing all my efforts around this to find a same-sex couple to take the plunge! I think it will be a compelling, tangible way to spark dialogue about what it means/doesn’t mean to have a state-sanctioned union. For the listeners, we would have a beautiful tale of romance that legally doesn’t mean anything, and we would use it as a platform to talk about why it is so important that we all should have the same freedoms. You can help the fight for equal rights, get showered with attention AND not have to deal with actual legal consequences of saying “I Do.” IT WILL BE FUN! Vocalo.org is providing the band, the cake, an officiator…all the fixins! All you have to do is tell us your story. Details for the contest are at vocalo.org/marryme , and you can shoot me an email at thinkpinkradio(((@)))gmail.com to get the inside scoop.  You have to be in Chicago the week leading up to June 25th. SERIOUSLY LET’S DO IT.
